Goa, once a preferred New Year destination for Indians and international tourists alike, is reportedly seeing fewer visitors this season. Many travelers are now opting for tropical alternatives like Thailand. Bengaluru-based CEO Deepak Shenoy recently shared why he skipped his beloved Goa this New Year and chose Thailand instead.
In a post on X, Shenoy expressed frustration with Goa’s beach restrictions, particularly lifeguards preventing swimmers from venturing too far into the sea. “The lifeguards in Goa whistle incessantly when you swim even a few meters into the water. It ruins the experience for me and my kids,” he wrote.
He also mentioned that Goa has become more expensive, stating, “Goa isn’t as economical as before, though where I went in Thailand wasn’t cheaper either. Restaurants in Goa aren’t too costly, but the overall vibe feels different now.”
Despite his complaints, Shenoy acknowledged that Goa remains one of his favorite destinations for its food and atmosphere. However, he found Thailand’s beaches more peaceful and family-friendly. “The whistling lifeguards and stray dogs at some beaches disrupt the experience. Thailand, on the other hand, offers no-nonsense beaches. Still, I’ll visit Goa for its food, vibe, and locals,” he added.
Shenoy’s remarks sparked a debate online. While some supported his perspective, others defended the strict safety measures on Goa’s beaches. A user responded, “Safety must come first. Many incidents occur when visitors ignore warnings. Lifeguards are only doing their job to ensure safety.”
The discussion highlights a growing trend of Indian travelers seeking newer destinations, while Goa grapples with maintaining its charm amid rising concerns over safety and costs.
